Gang arrested for looting 15 kg silver ornaments from jewellery merchant

A gang of four persons were arrested by Vaniyambadi police on Thursday for looting silver ornaments, worth around ₹40 lakh, from a jewellery merchant in the area.

Police said that the arrested persons were identified as K. Babu, 30, V. Narasihman, 30, R. Amulu, 26, and G. Mani, 35. They are residents in Vaniyambadi town. They were working as wage labourers in Vaniyambadi.

Initial inquiry revealed that B. Deepak, 36, was running a silver jewellery outlet in Arcot town for many years. He also designs and manufactures silver ornaments based on orders from customers. Police said that after selling 55 kg of silver ornaments, Deepak, 36, the jewellery merchant, and his friend Kiran, were returning in their car with 15 kg of unsold silver ornaments when the gang intercepted them, looted the valuables and fled on their two-wheelers.

Based on an alert, police inspected the spot. A case was registered and Tirupattur SP V. Shyamala Devi formed special teams to nab the gang. Vaniyambadi police analysed CCTV cameras and conducted a combing operation in the area. Vaniyambadi Town police analyzed CCTV cameras and conducted a combing operation in the area. All six border checkposts in the districts were also on high alert. Police arrested the gang from their hideout near Vaniyambadi, and recovered the stolen ornaments. They were lodged at a sub-jail in Tirupattur. Further probe is under way.
