The month of August marks the observation of vascular health awareness, and on the eve of Vascular Disease Awareness Day, which falls on August 6, doctors from Kauvery Hospital stressed the need to safeguard vascular health, a growing concern in India, in light of its massive diabetes burden. The doctors were speaking at a webinar of The Hindu Wellness Series on ‘Vascular Health: Prevention, Healing and Limb Protection’ held on Wednesday (August 5, 2026).

N. Sekar, chief vascular and endovascular surgeon, Kauvery Hospital, Chennai, gave an overview of the need to understand vascular health and create awareness about it. He explained the link between diabetes and vascular disease, noting that the length of time a person lived with diabetes increased the risk of vascular disease and highlighted that an amputation-free Tamil Nadu campaign had been started to help bring down the number of amputations.

Arunagiri Viruthagiri, consultant vascular and endovascular surgeon, Kauvery Hospital, Tiruchi – Cantonment, delved into the details of the vascular structure in the human body – the network of blood vessels. He explained the different diseases that affect the arteries and veins, why these occurred, treatment options, and prevention strategies.

Anushri S., consultant endocrinologist at Kauvery Hospital, Salem, explained the burden of diabetes India currently faces and the mechanisms through which diabetes affected vascular health. She stressed the need for early detection and control of blood sugar levels.

All the doctors underscored the need to keep moving – as ‘sitting is the new smoking’ – and for patients with diabetes to regularly check and take care of their feet.

The doctors also answered a number of audience questions related to identification of vascular issues in the feet, varicose veins and their treatment, vascular parkinsonism, diets for better diabetes control, diabetes in menopausal women and more.
