Brick kilns in Tripura are facing closure due to a shortage of coal, an official of the kiln owners’ association said on Monday (February 16, 2026). The problem worsened over the past two weeks.

Most brick kilns had already stopped production, and some had fuel supply for only seven-eight days, the President of the Tripura Brick Kilns Association Vivekanandanda Choudhury said. In some kilns, there is no stock of coal, Mr. Choudhary said.

Tripura has approximately 300 brick kilns, with 20 of them non-functional for various reasons. The rest are operational but face challenges due to the shortage of coal from Meghalaya.

Kilns additionally face financial losses with a widening gap between income and expenditure. Hundreds of workers from others States, including Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam, work in Tripura’s kilns.
