As part of the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), a four-day citizen science event held every February, the WWF-India will coordinate a Campus Bird Count (CBC) on 10 campuses in Thiruvananthapuram district in the coming days.

The CBC is a sub-event of GBBC that is conducted on campuses. Participants will watch birds every 15 minutes and upload their lists on the eBird App, a citizen science platform, from February 13 to 16, or at least on any of these days.

The participants were provided an orientation on documenting all birds they can find on their campuses, through two online sessions on February 10 and 11.

The expected outcomes of the CBC are a bird register, a photo story, poster of bird diversity on all 10 campuses, and a compiled document of Thiruvananthapuram district.

Expert birders from the WWF-India will join the students on each campus and provide them with technical support and guidance. A team of faculty members from each campus will also provide required support.

The Great Backyard Bird Count in 2025 had over 10,000 participants, from more than 24,000 locations, recording 1,086 species, nearly 78% of all bird species found in India. The annual count helps researchers understand how birds are distributed across the country, how they respond to habitat changes and weather patterns, and whether their populations are stable, growing, or declining over time. It also assists in the development of site-specific conservation strategies.
