A 40-year-old person was killed after he fell into the compactor machine at the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation garbage transfer station in Yousufguda on Saturday (January 24, 2026) morning, triggering protests by workers’ unions at the site.

The deceased has been identified as Sudhakar, a resident of Borabanda, who was employed at the dumpyard. According to officials, the incident occurred while he was carrying out routine work involving the disposal of garbage.

“He climbed up to dump the garbage inside the truck and accidentally fell into the machine. He was crushed and died on the spot,” a police official said.

The incident led to a protest by Sudhakar’s co-workers, who alleged negligence and inadequate safety measures at the facility and also demanded action.

GHMC officials refuted the statement that the deceased was an employee at the transfer station, and clarified that he was a private person who transported commercial waste to the transfer station without authorisation.

While the Hyderabad Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Limited (HIMSW), the concessionaire firm that runs the transfer station, ought not to have allowed him entry, they even let him approach the machine and empty the trash into the hopper, when he accidentally fell inside and died.

“Had the management denied him entry, he would have dumped the garbage on the roadside, and this was the concern behind him being allowed inside. After this, we have issued strict instructions not to allow any unauthorised person inside the transfer stations,” Additional Commissioner (Sanitation) C. N. Raghuprasad informed.

Under pressure from the unions, the HIMSW management agreed to pay a compensation of ₹16 lakh to the family of the deceased, he said.

Madhura Nagar police have registered a case for death due to negligence against the GHMC plant manager and the concessionaire firm. Further investigation is underway.
