Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) founder and Chidambaram MP Thol. Thirumavalavan has been facing severe criticism on social media for his comments that his party is yet to formalise an alliance with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam and that it would continue to have a friendly relationship with the DMK, which many have observed as “contradictory and confusing”.

On Wednesday, Mr. Thirumavalavan said that he was expressing his point of view from the perspective of the national politics and the need to form a national anti-BJP front.

The barrage of comments over his views resulted in the party publishing a clarification on its official page on X.

The clarification from the party said, “Mr. Thirumavalavan was referring to past events and past positions. However, as usual, certain media outlets have deliberately twisted his remarks and portrayed them as though they represent his current position.”

“Just because DMK inducted an office-bearer of the VCK into their party, I didn’t oppose them. There is a necessity to build a national anti-BJP front — both the TVK and DMK should be a part of it. This is my point of view…but many would say that I am confusing everyone. We will see if DMK can be a part of the INDIA bloc,” Mr. Thirumavalavan said.

On Wednesday, MDMK chief Vaiko made a comment on Mr. Thirumavalavan’s remark that the VCK would continue to exchange views with DMK president M.K. Stalin, which was widely considered as an attempt to mock the VCK chief.

Mr. Vaiko said, “He should be given a Nobel Prize,” to which Mr. Thirumavalavan later retorted, “I thank him for his recommendation.”
