Street plays set the stage for Bahuroopi 2026

Ahead of the much-anticipated Bahuroopi 2026, scheduled to begin at Rangayana on January 12, street plays were staged across the city on January 10 as part of a publicity drive for the Bahuroopi Baba Saheb National Theatre Festival.

Theatre personality ‘Mime’ Ramesh inaugurated the street plays near the Dufferin Clock outside Devaraja Market. Rangayana director Satish Tiptur, Kannada and Culture department joint director Mallikarjunaswamy, Rangayana deputy director M.D. Sudarshan, officials from the Mysuru City Corporation, and Rangayana artistes were present on the occasion. Various theatre troupes will continue to stage street plays at different locations across the city to promote the festival.

The silver jubilee edition of the festival, titled ‘Bahuroopi Baba Saheb – March Towards Equality’, will be held from January 11 to January 18. The festival will feature a wide range of events including stage plays, a national symposium, a film festival, folk performances, book exhibitions, a handicrafts expo, demonstrations, a desi food festival, painting exhibitions, street plays and Makkala Bahuroopi (children’s theatre).

The film festival will be inaugurated by noted writer Baragur Ramachandrappa at Bhoomigeetha at 11 a.m. on January 11. Durgadas, chairperson of the Karnataka Bhatyalata Academy, will inaugurate the Janapada (folk) festival at the Kindarijogi venue on the Rangayana premises at 6 p.m. Folk performances will be staged daily at the venue.

The Bahuroopi Baba Saheb National Theatre Festival will be formally inaugurated on January 12 at 5.30 p.m. by noted theatre personality from Manipur Heisnam Sabitri. Mysuru district in-charge Minister H.C. Mahadevappa will inaugurate the book exhibition, handicrafts expo and mela, while Kannada and Culture Minister Shivraj Tangadagi will release the festival souvenir.

On the same occasion, Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, Mysuru MP, will inaugurate the Babasaheb photography exhibition and Sunil Bose, MP, will inaugurate the painting exhibition.

Earlier in the day, noted theatre personality Rameshwari Verma will inaugurate Children’s Bahuroopi at Kalamandira at 10.30 a.m.
