The minimum temperatures in Telangana are likely to dip below normal by 3°C to 4°C at isolated pockets over the next two days, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday.

The IMD, in its latest bulletin, did not issue any cold wave alert and said that dry weather will prevail all over the State.

Hyderabad and its surrounding areas for the next 24 hours will see mainly clear sky which will transform into partly cloudy sky towards evening or night. “Fog or misty conditions are very likely to prevail during morning hours. Mist or hazy conditions are very likely to prevail during night hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 29°C and 13°C, respectively,” said the bulletin.

Meanwhile, according to data from Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) between December 22 and 23, a total of nine districts in the State recorded temperatures below 10°C. Sirpur in Kumaram Bheem Asifabad recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 7°C.

This was followed by 7.6°C in Kohir (Sangareddy), 8°C in Moinabad (Rangareddy), 8.1°C in Behempoor (Adilabad), 8.9°C in Gandhari (Kamareddy), 9°C in Nawabpet (Vikarabad), 9.4°C in Yeldurthy (Medak), 9.8°C in Markook (Siddipet) and 9.9°C in Pembi (Nirmal).

The other 24 districts recorded temperatures ranging between 10°C and 14°C. In urban areas, Uppal in Medchal Malkajgiri recorded 10.6°C and Maredpally in Hyderabad recorded 12°C.

While the minimum temperature of 4.5°C was recorded this winter season, the lowest temperature recorded in the State in the past 10 years was 2°C on January 10, 2015. This was followed by 2.7°C on December 31, 2018 and 3.0°C on December 26, 2015, according to TGDPS.

Temperature Date
1 2.0°C January 10, 2015
2 2.7°C December 31, 2018
3 3.0°C December 26, 2015
4 3.4°C December 22, 2020

8 4.0°C December 20, 2016
9 4.5°C December 20-22, 2025
10 5.0°C December 29, 2019

In winters, the temperatures drop at night, post 12.30 a.m. up to 5.30 a.m. ”Temperature shows a sudden rise of 5° to 8°C in one hour from 06.30 to 07.30 a.m. This sudden fall or rise of temperature after sunset or sunrise is because of semi-arid nature of soil,” stated a report titled ‘Weather and Climatology of Telangana’ published by the the Society and Directorate of Economics and Statistics in 2024.

Minimum temperatures reaches 5°C over Adilabad, Kumuram Bheem, Peddapalli, Mancherial, Sangareddy, Rangareddy, Vikarabas and Siddipet districts in December.

Which parts of GHMC record lowest temperatures?

In Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area, the lowest temperatures (<11°C) in winter are observed over Patancheru, Ramachandrapuram, Serlingampally, Rajendranagar, Uppal, Malkajgiri and Kapra. The remaining central part of the GHMC area has recorded more than 11°C.
