In a tragic accident, at least six people died on the spot and over 35 persons were injured in a head-on collision of two private buses near Duraisamypuram in Tenkasi district on Monday (November 24, 2025).

According to the police, the two buses — the first one that was proceeding towards Kovilpatti from Tenkasi and other one that was proceeding towards Tenkasi from Rajapalayam — rammed into each other when the vehicles were passing through Duraisamypuram village near Kadayanallur on the Madurai-Kollam national highway.

The two buses collided head-on with great impact, leaving six dead including five women and a man on the spot. The deceased have been identified as Vanraj (67) from Puthukudi in Tenkasi, Thenmozhi (55) from Kadayanallur, Mallika (55) from Puliyankudi, Karapagavalli (32) from Sankarankoil.

The identities of two other women are yet to be established. Over 35 individuals were injured in the accident, including a few who sustained serious injuries. Of them, eight persons were referred to Tirunelveli Government Medical College and Hospital for intensive treatment and the remaining passengers were sent to government hospitals in Tenkasi and Kadayanallur.

The mangled remains of the buses were removed using an earthmover, after which traffic resumed.

Tenkasi District Collector A.K. Kamal Kishore and Superintendent of Police (SP) S. Aravind inspected the accident spot, officials said.

A case has been registered at Ilathur police station and investigations are on.

CM’s condolence

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, in a post on X, condoled the deaths. Mr. Stalin said he was pained over the accident which killed six persons. “The government would stand by all those who are injured so that they recover soon,” he stated.

The Chief Minister added that he has directed Tenkasi Collector to visit the hospital and ensure medical treatment to all those injured in the accident.

Further, he has deputed Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, who is also in-charge of Tenkasi district, to rush to the spot to coordinate relief operations.
