Andhra Pradesh Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar has directed electricity officials to ensure swift restoration of power supply in areas likely to be affected by cyclone Arnab.

During a video conference with Eastern Power Distribution Company of Andhra Pradesh Limited (EPDCL) officials on Tuesday, the Minister reviewed preparedness measures and appointed special officers for districts expected to experience very severe cyclonic conditions. He directed the Chairmen and Managing Directors (CMDs) of power distribution companies to visit affected areas and monitor the situation on the ground.

The Energy Department has stocked up on poles, conductors, transformers, cables and other essential materials required for restoration work. Machinery should be kept ready to clear trees and vegetation obstructing power lines, he said.

A total of 6,000 personnel have been deployed for restoration work, including 4,000 from EPDCL and 1,000 each from the Southern Power Distribution Company of Andhra Pradesh Limited (SPDCL) and the Central Power Distribution Company of Andhra Pradesh Limited (CPDCL). Restoration work has already been taken up in several cyclone-affected areas.

Mr. Ravi Kumar directed officials to coordinate with the Revenue Department, village and ward secretariats and other departments to minimise loss of life and property.

He urged people to remain alert and report electricity-related problems immediately through the 1912 helpline. People should not touch snapped electric wires or conductors and must inform electricity officials without delay.

The Minister also instructed CMDs to ensure that the 1912 call centre remained operational round the clock. The centre has been equipped to handle more than 30,000 calls simultaneously.
