Two children were killed, and another sustained serious injuries after a retaining wall collapsed onto a makeshift snack stall amid torrential rain at Sanchakkadavu in Kasaragod district on Saturday evening (June 6).
The deceased were identified as Munsir, 9, and Musammil, 14. The brothers reportedly operated a small, makeshift snack stall during holidays to earn a modest income.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. when their 14-year-old neighbour, Wahash, reached the stall. A brick retaining wall situated behind the shop suddenly collapsed following incessant heavy rain, trapping the three children under debris, mud and stones.
Preliminary findings indicate that the wall, which was part of a recently constructed house, had weakened due to soil erosion and strong water flow caused by the continuing downpour.
Residents and rescue workers rushed to the spot and pulled the children out from the rubble before shifting them to a cooperative hospital in Cherkala. However, Munsir and Musammil succumbed to their injuries. Wahash, who suffered serious injuries, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kasaragod.
The Adoor police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.
A red alert remains in force in the district.
