19,133 graduates receive degrees at Gulbarga University convocation

Three distinguished personalities were conferred honorary doctorates at the 43rd annual convocation of Gulbarga University at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Bhavan on the university campus on Tuesday.

The former Minister P.G.R. Sindhia was honoured for his contribution to social and political spheres, the former Minister Murugesh Nirani was recognised for his social service and social activist Kedarlingayya Hiremath was awarded the honorary doctorate in recognition of his service to society.

Governor and Chancellor Thaawar Chand Gehlot presented the honorary degrees in the presence of other dignitaries.

Brief citations outlining the achievements of the award winners were read out on the occasion.

SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT

A total of 172 gold medals were awarded to 77 students, 58 women and 19 men.

Of these, 24 medals were given to undergraduate students and 148 to postgraduate students.

In addition, nine gold medals were converted into cash prizes and distributed to 19 students, comprising 14 women and five men.

Among the medal winners, Channamma of the Kannada Studies Institute on the university’s main campus topped the list with 11 gold medals.

Rahul of the Zoology Department secured nine medals, while Surekha from the MBA Department won eight.

Shameem Rafat from the Government First Grade College, Sedam (Political Science), and Deepa from the Department of Social Work secured six medals each.

Subiya Noorain (Computer Science), Priyanka Rathod (Chemistry), Shashikumar (Biochemistry) and Preeti G. Khemkar (B.Com), Gurukul Degree College, Kalaburagi, were among those who won five medals each.

In all, 19,133 candidates were awarded degrees at the convocation, including 15,504 undergraduate, 3,462 postgraduate, 44 PG diplomas and 123 Ph.D degrees. The graduates comprised 10,463 men and 8,670 women.
