Members of Janasamanyara Vedike and Udyogakankshigala Horata Samiti will organise a protest rally in Dharwad on Monday, seeking filling of all vacant posts in the State government.

The State government should take a clear stand and declare a policy decision about filling vacant government posts, at the Winter Session in Belagavi.

“It should announce a road map for recruitment in various departments. In order to press for this demand, we are taking out a protest rally in Dharwad,” committee convenor Yellappa Hegade said in Dharwad on Sunday.

He also urged the Union government to fill its long-pending vacancies.

“The number of vacant posts in 43 departments of the State government is 2.84 lakh. The corresponding figure for the Union government is around 7.8 lakh. But none of these governments are showing any enthusiasm to fill the vacant posts. This has pushed millions of youths into despair. They need to end this policy of outsourcing or running understaffed departments,” he said.

He said that over 25,000 youth will take out the protest rally on Monday from Shrinagar to the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Dharwad.

Their other demands include relaxing the age limit for recruitment to all posts by five years as recruitment has not taken place in the recent years, clearing the confusion related to internal reservation, issuing permits for job aspirants to run Indira Canteen, reduction in application fees and publishing a fixed, annual calendar for recruitment to vacant posts.

In the meantime, Hubballi-Dharwad Police have denied permission for the rally.

Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar told reporters that the permission for the rally has been denied as the organisers have not followed the due process and that they are planning to disrupt life.

“Our officers have learnt through social media messages about the rally. We have come to know that the organisers have planned a night-long protest and have planned to disrupt traffic by closing major junctions. Earlier too, a similar rally disrupted traffic in Dharwad as protestors closed down the Jubilee Circle for over five hours.” he said.

“It threw life out of gear and caused severe inconvenience to the general public. We have, therefore, denied permission as we need to maintain proper law and order and ensure that the public are not put to inconvenience,” he said.

Mr. Hegade, however, said that the rally will be held as scheduled despite denial of permission by the police.

“This is a burning issue and uncertainty looms large over the career of lakhs of students. There is no question of withdrawing the rally. We will go ahead with it,” he said.
