Emphasising the importance of disaster preparedness and fire safety, speakers at a meeting organised to create awareness about disaster preparedness called upon young people to develop awareness, respond promptly during emergencies and contribute to reducing the loss of lives and property during disasters.

A programme marking the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2026, themed ‘Resilience Starts at Home’, was organised by Mera Yuva Bharat (MYBharat), Anantapur, under the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, in coordination with NSS, JNTUA; the Indian Red Cross Society, Anantapur; District Fire Department; Pragathi Padham Youth Association; and PVKK Engineering College, at PVKK Engineering College.

The programme was attended by G. Mamatha, NSS Coordinator, JNTUA; V.S. Srinivasa Reddy, District Fire Officer; Bisathi Bharath, MYBharat Representative; B. Ramesh Babu, Principal, PVKK Engineering College; G. Lakshma Prasad, Chairperson, IRCS Anantapur; and others.

Addressing the gathering, the speakers spoke about the importance of disaster awareness, first aid, emergency response and public safety during natural and human-induced disasters, including earthquakes, floods and fire accidents. They said preparedness, coordination and timely action were essential to protecting lives and minimising damage.

As part of the programme, the District Fire Department conducted a mock fire safety drill, demonstrating essential fire prevention practices, emergency response techniques and safety measures to be followed during fire accidents. The hands-on demonstration provided students with valuable practical knowledge of fire safety and disaster management.

Painting competitions were also organised to encourage creativity and promote awareness of disaster preparedness among students and youth. Winners were felicitated with prizes and certificates of appreciation.

The programme aimed to empower young people with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to respond responsibly during emergencies and contribute to building safer, disaster-resilient communities.
