A 26-year-old teacher who was a resident of Kothattai Colony on the outskirts Thanjavur town was hacked to death by a 29-year-old man on Thursday (November 27, 2025).

The victim, Kavya of Kothattai Colony, Melakalakudi near Punnainallur, worked as a temporary teacher at the Government Primary School, Alankudi. According to the police, the incident took place around 9 a.m., when she was riding to school on a two-wheeler.

The accused, identified as Ajithkumar of the same area, who claimed he was in a relationship with the deceased for over a decade, intercepted her and inflicted bleeding injuries on Kavya’s head, leading to her death on the spot.

The Ammapettai police rushed to the spot and sent the body to the Thanjavur Medical College hospital for post-mortem. Pursuing the phone call records of the deceased, the accused was secured by the Ammapettai police.

Preliminary investigations reveal that on the night of November 26, Kavya informed Ajithkumar about her recent engagement with her cousin. An enraged Ajithkumar told her that he would not let her marry anyone else, police said.
