A 45-year-old woman was arrested by the Arani taluk police in Tiruvannamalai on Thursday for stealing eight sovereigns of gold chain from a 70-year-old commuter travelling in a government bus.

Police said the arrested person was identified as K. Satya, 45, a resident of Chengam town. The victim was S. Padmavathi, 70, a resident of Chennai. Initial inquiry revealed that the Padmavathi was travelling in the government bus from Chennai to Arani. Satya was seated next to her.

Police said that during the trip, both were befriended. Padmavathi gave her handbag containing the gold chain to Satya after believing her assurance to keep it safe during the journey. After some time, Satya handed over the handbag to Padmavathi and got down from the bus at Irumbedu village near Arani.

Police said that Padmavathi checked her bag after reaching her relative’s house and found the gold chain missing. The incident occurred on September 13. Based on the complaint, a case was registered. Special teams analysed CCTV footage along the route and mobile phone signals. A police team nabbed the suspect from her hideout near Chengam. The police also recovered the gold chain from her. Later, she was lodged at Central Prison in Vellore.
