The Kozhikode City police on Thursday arrested a 32-year-old woman after recovering 56 grams of hashish oil from her during a surprise inspection at the Government Medical College Hospital here.

The accused, identified as Aswathi from Wayanad who is currently residing in Kasaragod, had reportedly come to the hospital as a bystander for a patient admitted to the maternity ward.

According to the police, the contraband was concealed in two small plastic bottles. Hospital staff and caregivers in the ward reportedly became suspicious of the woman’s behaviour and alerted the police, leading to the inspection and seizure.

Police officials attached to the Kozhikode Medical College station said the woman was attempting to smuggle the cannabis extract to her husband, who is lodged in the Kozhikode district jail. Investigators found that she intended to pass the substance to other inmates who were brought to the Medical College Hospital, from where it could eventually reach the prison.

A case was registered, and an investigation is under way to trace the source of the drug. The police said they had intensified surveillance to prevent attempts to supply narcotic substances to prisoners through hospitals or other transit points.
