The Telangana Legislative Assembly will convene its seventh session from December 29, setting the stage for a politically intense winter session with irrigation and river water-sharing disputes expected to dominate proceedings.
The House will adjourn for a three-day New Year break and resume sittings on January 2. The session comes amid escalating political sparring between the ruling Congress and the Opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).
The session assumes significance as the Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has signalled an aggressive push to corner the previous BRS regime on irrigation policies, particularly on the sharing of Krishna and Godavari river waters.
He made his intentions clear asking the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) K Chandrashekhar Rao to attend and demand the duration of the sessions to be lengthy so that a meaningful discussion can be held.
The political temperature rose after KCR, addressing a press conference on December 21, accused both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of “betraying” Telangana’s interests. He alleged that the Congress government had compromised the State’s rightful share of Krishna river water in the Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Project.
Responding to the allegations, Mr. Reddy made serious allegations in an informal meet with senior reporters claiming that the State’s rights were handed over to Andhra Pradesh by KCR during the BRS regime.
The sessions will also witness heated debates on the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project and the controversial phone tapping case, issues that have become central to the Congress’s political offensive against BRS.
