West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday (June 7, 2026) said the West Bengal Government would provide jobs to kin of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers killed in the post-election violence of 2021.
Speaking at an event organised by the BJP in Kolkata’s New Town Area, Mr. Adhikari said jobs would be provided to kin of 315 deceased BJP workers in June. The Chief Minister also announced one-time financial assistance of ₹5 lakh for all the affected families from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
The BJP had lost the West Bengal Assembly polls in 2021, and the BJP workers were subjected to post-poll violence. During the campaign for the West Bengal Assembly polls in 2026, Mr. Adhikari had promised to provide compensation to the families of BJP workers killed in post-poll violence.
After the post-poll violence in 2021, a committee by the National Human Rights Committee had said West Bengal was experiencing a “manifestation of the ‘law of ruler’ instead of ‘rule of law’.”
After the BJP Government came to power, the West Bengal Government has started registering and reopening previous cases relating to violence during and after the 2021 Assembly polls. The State Government started 458 new enquiries, 181 new First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered, and 59 cases where final reports had been submitted have been reopened.
West Bengal has had a history of electoral violence, and even after the 2026 Assembly polls, there have been reports of post-poll violence, though the incidents of violence were fewer in number. The Trinamool Congress has been at the receiving end of the violence.
