The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) is accelerating the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) works in Thiruvananthapuram. The district currently ranks fourth in the State in the implementation of the national flagship scheme, which aims to provide Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC) to rural households.
Several of the water supply schemes and components necessary for providing connectivity in the rural areas of the district are expected to be commissioned over this year and the next. Subject to the availability of funds, the KWA is hoping to get all the targeted works completed by December 2027, a senior district-level official of the water utility said.
Thiruvananthapuram district is close behind Kollam, Ernakulam and Alappuzha in JJM implementation with 66% of the targeted works completed, according to the JJM updates of the Union Jal Shakti Ministry. Of the total 6.84 lakh households in the districts, 4.51 lakh have tap connections now. At the same time, only six of the 73 panchayats and eight of the 94 villages in the district have a certified ‘Har Ghar Jal’ status, according to the Ministry. The national-level JJM scheme, with 2028 as the revised deadline, aims to provide all rural households with FHTC.
15 mld project
In the case of individual schemes for panchayats, a 15 mld (million litres a day) project for Pallickal, Madavoor and Navayikulam panchayats is progressing fast, according to the KWA. Sixty per cent of the work on the water treatment plant has been completed. This scheme is expected to be commissioned by the middle of 2027. The civil works for another scheme, meant for Varkala and adjoining panchayats, are also almost over.
An 18 mld project for the Pulimath, Nagaroor and Karuvaram panchayats is awaiting electricity connection and is expected to be commissioned shortly. A 6 mld scheme is in progress for the Mudakkal panchayat, and an 18 mld scheme for Pothencode, Andoorkonam and Mangalapuram panchayats. Schemes for Chenkal, Karode, and Kulathur panchayats and Kottukal and Athiyannoor panchayats are also in progress, according to the KWA.
A number of schemes have already been completed and commissioned. They include a scheme covering Vamanapuram, Nellanad and Manickal panchayats; a scheme for Attingal and adjoining panchayats, and a 11 mld scheme for Kuttichal and Poovachal panchayats. Land-related issues have delayed work on some schemes. Extension of existing distribution lines and ramping up connections are also part of the JJM works in the district.
