Ahead of the Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote a letter to the people of West Bengal saying that the entire nation is worried about the State as it sinks into the “darkness of anarchy” and urged them to take an oath to build a ‘Viksit West Bengal’ (Developed West Bengal) in 2026.

Urging people of the State to join this grand mission of development, Mr. Modi in the letter said he was eagerly waiting for an opportunity to serve them.

“An opportunity where, in the words of Kabiguru, ‘Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high — Chitta Jetha Bhoy Shunya, Uccha Jetha Shiir,’ there will be freedom from corruption and misrule.’ the Prime Minister said.

The West Bengal BJP has started an initiative of ‘Griha Sampak Abhiyan (An initiative to connect with households)’ in the State since the beginning of February 2026. The campaign is going on door-to-door with the common people. According to BJP sources, the open letter written by the Prime Minister will be handed over to the voters of the State as BJP leaders will reach out to the people.

Illegal infiltration

Alleging that the “holy land [West Bengal] is tarnished by illegal infiltration and violence against women,” Mr. Modi said that, “Today, fake voters are ruling in golden Bengal”. He also reached out to representatives of the Matua community and assured them citizenship through the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

“Our refugee brothers and sisters, victims of religious violence, will get citizenship through the CAA, and good governance free from illegal infiltration will be established in my West Bengal,” he said.

Targeting the Trinamool Congress on several counts, Mr. Modi said that in the post-Independence era, West Bengal was the guiding light of the nation’s economy and the pioneer of industrialisation but, today, seeing this ailing and dilapidated state of West Bengal pained his heart.

“The irreparable damage done to West Bengal over the past six decades due to misrule and appeasement politics is indescribable. On one hand, due to a lack of employment opportunities, the youth are forced to migrate to other States; on the other hand, due to a lack of security, the mothers and sisters of my West Bengal are scared and terrified today,” the letter stated.

The Prime Minister also highlighted various development projects of the Union government and said that “despite extreme non-cooperation and hostility from the State government, today five crore people of West Bengal have been brought under the umbrella of banking services through the Central Jan-Dhan Yojana”.

Mr. Modi said his government had constructed 85 lakh toilets in the State, and reached out to one crore families through the Ujjwala Yojana and over 52 lakh farmer brothers through direct financial assistance under the Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme.
