Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering (VVCE), Mysuru, announced that two of its student teams have emerged winners at the recently held Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2025 – Hardware Edition.

Team BRAINI-X, led by Dhanush S., worked on a problem statement given by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, focusing on healthcare challenges faced by patients with upper limb weakness or paralysis owing to orthopaedic or neurological conditions. The team developed an innovative orthopaedic rehabilitation system that helps patients perform controlled hand movements through guided hold-and-release actions.

“The system allows customisation of speed, repetitions, rehabilitation cycles, and rest time based on patient needs. By supporting gradual muscle activation and natural hand movement, the solution helps patients improve strength, coordination, and confidence during recovery. The evaluation team appreciated the work and announced a cash prize of ₹75,000 at Galgotias University, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh,” a press release read.

Team ZANTHOS, led by Yatharth Agarwal, addressed rehabilitation challenges faced by long-term axillary crutch users. Their solution is a smart, foldable aluminium axillary crutch designed to improve safety, comfort, and clinical monitoring. The crutch includes ergonomic dampers to reduce nerve pressure, IoT sensors to monitor load, posture, and grip strength, and safety features such as fall detection and an SOS alert. A mobile app enables doctors and caregivers to track patient progress in real time. The team was awarded a cash prize of ₹1,50,000 at G.L. Bajaj Institute of Technology and Management, Greater Noida, the release added.

B. Sadashive Gowda, principal, VVCE said, “I am extremely proud of our students for their success at the Smart India Hackathon 2025. Their innovative, socially relevant solutions reflect VVCE’s commitment. I congratulate the teams and faculty mentors for the achievement.”
