Festive fervour marked the city on the eve of the New Year on Wednesday, as shops, bakeries, restaurants, liquor shops and cafes brimmed with revellers.

The Besant Road was crammed with people making purchases, while the shopping complexes lit up the narrow road with colourful lights. The Mahatma Gandhi (MG Road) also wore a new look as all the commercial establishments were decked up with lights.

A series of events are lined up for the night in the city, including ‘Naatu Naatu’ song fame and Indian playback singer Rahul Siplugunj’s live concert, jamming and musical sessions, while hotels hosted grand parties for the people. Celebrations were also seen at apartments, where cultural performances were organised for children.

The police department imposed restrictions on public celebrations, cake cuttings, late night bike rides and conducted tests to check drunk driving.
