Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol. Thirumavalavan on Tuesday said Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam founder Vijay should thank Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for coming to Karur at midnight and providing solace to the families of those who died or were hospitalised after a stampede at a TVK rally.

He paid homage to the portraits of 41 persons at the VCK headquarters in Chennai and told journalists the party will present Rs. 50,000 to each family of the deceased. He said the State Government must provide a government job to a person from the families of the deceased apart from the solatium.

“BJP and other alliance partners are trying to seek political mileage from this incident. We have no hate towards Vijay and we didn’t seek his arrest. However, he should have taken responsibility and our criticism against him was because he didn’t take that responsibility. Justice Aruna Jagadeesan’s Commission and the Special Investigation Team led by Asra Garg is welcome. Stampede incidents such as this shouldn’t take place again in Tamil Nadu. This is a lesson not just for Vijay but for everyone in public life,” he said.

Mr. Thirumavalavan added, “It is entirely acceptable for [Union Ministers] Nirmala Sitharaman and L. Murugan to meet families of deceased and victims. But why did they [BJP] form a fact finding committee and try to reiterate that there was an ‘administrative failure in Karur by raising silly issues?”
