The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi’s (VCK) Nagapattinam MLA Aloor Shanavas alleged on Sunday that Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder Vijay was making slanderous statements about the functioning of the DMK government.

Addressing journalists in Chennai, Mr. Shanavas alleged that the crowds that gather to see Mr. Vijay were there for his “star power” and said that Mr. Vijay’s claim that he was putting the DMK government on the backfoot with his ‘questions’ was absurd.

Leadership quality

“First, let him answer the questions posed by journalists. No leader can remain without encountering questions from the press. Where is his leadership quality? He has fans across all sections. He is not just a film actor now. He is also in politics,” he said.

“When he makes defamatory statements about the DMK and its alliance partners, we are forced to expose his intentions. If there is an issue on the ground, the VCK is the only party that supports the people in need of help,” Mr. Shanavas remarked.

He asked, “What has he actually done to oppose the BJP? He is taking ‘on the surface’ statements to attract the anti-BJP and minority votes. Then, we have to oppose him. What is his intention? What is his role? When he lies, we are forced to take him on. The Fisheries University named after former CM J. Jayalalithaa is already functioning there (Nagapattinam). Why did he say it doesn’t exist?”
