The civil services exam is conducted annually in three stages — preliminary, main, and interview — to select candidates for the Indian Administrative Services (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and Indian Police Service (IPS) and other services.

What happens after a candidate qualifies in UPSC (Main) examination

A candidate who clears the written examination (Main) will proceed to the personality test, also referred to as the UPSC interview. The interview carries 275 marks, while the written Mains examination carries 1,750 marks. The final merit list is prepared using the combined scores of both the main and interview stages of the UPSC examination.

Candidates who qualify for the Mains examination will receive e-summon letters of personality tests (Interviews), which can be downloaded from the commission’s website.

Candidates who may not be able to download their e-Summon letters, should immediately contact the office of the Commission through letter or through the following means:

  • 011-40303444/24041001

  • Email: csm-upsc@nic.in

No paper/physical summon letters will be issued for the personality tests (interviews) by the commission.

When, where will the Civil Services interview be held

Dates of personality tests (interviews) of the candidates will be notified in due course, as per the official communication. The interviews will be held at the Office of the Union Public Service Commission at Dholpur House, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi.
