Union Budget: Turtle trails to be developed along Karnataka coast

Over the past few years, the coastal districts of Karnataka, especially Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannda have witnessed hundreds of sea turtles, mainly the Olive Ridleys, flocking to the beaches to lay eggs between December and March.

Union Minister of Finance Nirmala Sitharaman, who presented the Union Budget on Sunday, announced the development of turtle trails along the coast of Karnataka.

Union Budget 2026 highlights

“India has the potential and opportunity to offer world-class trekking and hiking experiences. We will develop ecologically sustainable Turtle Trails along key nesting sites in the coastal areas of Odisha, Karnataka, and Kerala,” the Finance Minister said in her Budget speech.

Over the past few years, the coastal districts of Karnataka, especially Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannda have witnessed hundreds of sea turtles, mainly the Olive Ridleys, flocking to the beaches to lay eggs between December and March.

There are several turtle nesting sites along Karnataka’s vast coastline.

The Forest Department has undertaken turtle conservation efforts to ensure survival of turtles and their hatchlings.

Reacting to the announcement in the Budget to develop turtle trails along the State’s coast, Karnataka Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre said that the State government has already set a model for this project and taken steps to protect sea turtle eggs and the hatchlings in Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannda districts.

“Conservation of sea turtles has been included in tourism. The State government has already taken steps to protect sea turtle eggs and the hatchlings in Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannda districts,” Mr. Khandre said.
