Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi founder and Chidambaram M.P., Thol. Thirumavalavan, on Monday said though Opposition parties oppose the Election Commission of India’s ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, there is no other option but to participate in it.

“There is no need for an SIR across India, especially in Tamil Nadu. They (BJP government) cannot directly implement Citizenship Amendment Act because of spontaneous protests five years ago. Now, instead of implementing it openly, they are using ECI to implement SIR to create a national register of citizens,” he alleged. “At least 10-15% of the people might not register as voters,” he feared.

At a meeting in Chennai held to protest against the SIR, the VCK leader claimed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Amit Shah’s agenda is to destroy Dr. Ambedkar’s dream. While the protest cannot stop the SIR, their agenda can be exposed.

“Only if we understand Ambedkar’s dream, we can understand RSS’ dream. Dr. Ambedkar wanted caste, religious, and gender based differences to be removed from India. He wanted to ensure social justice, education, livelihood and a share in power for every one. To achieve this, the inequalities created in the name of caste and religion must be eradicated. This was his dream….he wanted to create this new India. And for this, he created a weapon called Constitution of India, which gives us the right to speak, protest, argue, found political parties, start associations and gives us share in power and democracy. RSS’ and Sangh Parivar groups don’t like this,” he contended.

According to Mr. Thirumavalavan BJP is unable to make inroads into Tamil Nadu because of DMK, VCK, and Communists. “Across India, they are using Dalit communities to find a footing in every state. They are using Dalit leaders and organisations to take root. The scheduled castes across India came together on one platform, which was Dr. Ambedkar’s achievement. But, RSS and BJP have engineered a split between the SC communities by focussing on specific caste identities. They are doing the same in Tamil Nadu.”

The VCK leader said the Sangh Parivar had made inroads into Nadar, Arundhadhiyar, Devendrakula Vellalar, Kongu Vellalar Gounder communities. However, no matter how hard they try, they are unable to do the same in Adi Dravidar and Vanniyar communities because of VCK and Pattali Makkal Katchi. “Even they (PMK) are flirting with the BJP and are in alliance with them. But, VCK is a major obstruction against BJP,” he said.
