Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Wednesday launched the expansion of the Kalaignar sports kit scheme to urban local bodies and inaugurated two facilities on the campus of the Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University in Chengalpattu district. He launched the distribution of 19,767 sports kits for municipal corporations, municipalities, and town panchayats across Tamil Nadu at an event held at Vellore Institute of Technology in Chennai.
Speaking at the event, he said the government had been making continuous efforts to encourage sportspersons and many of them had brought honour to Tamil Nadu.
He said the Kalaignar sports kit scheme was launched in 2024 to cover all village panchayats. The scheme has now been expanded to cover 25 municipal corporations, 145 municipalities and 479 town panchayats in the State.
Earlier at the university, he inaugurated a swimming pool built at a cost of ₹5 crore and the Olympian Sharath Kamal Table Tennis Academy constructed at a cost of ₹2 crore.
