The Vidhana Soudha police on Thursday arrested two youths for allegedly attacking policemen on duty after they were confronted for misbehaving with a group of women near Balekundri Circle in the early hours of January 1.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 1.40 a.m. when the accused, identified as Ansh Mehta and Parv Rathi, both 22, behaved inappropriately with women who were waiting for a cab. The women then alerted the police.

Ravi K., constable, was deployed for bandobast duty during the New Year celebrations and was on night patrol. He confronted the accused, but they allegedly picked a quarrel with him following which the constable sought reinforcements. When Ravi called for reinforcements, the accused manhandled the police who arrived at the scene.

Following the incident, the police immediately overpowered the accused and took them into custody.

An FIR has been registered at the Vidhana Soudha police station, and the duo were produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.

The duo completed their graduation in the city, relocated to Chennai and returned a few days ago. They were staying in a rented accommodation. The duo had gone to a bar to celebrate New Year and harassed the girls.
