Two persons, including the driver of a sleeper bus, were killed and 35 passengers injured when their vehicle rammed into a rice-laden truck on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway in Uttar Pradesh, police said on Friday (May 29, 2026).

The accident took place near milestone 83 under Karhal police station limits on Thursday (May 28, 2026).

Inspector Pradeep Kumar Pandey of Karhal police station said the sleeper bus was carrying around 70 passengers and was on its way to Delhi from Gonda when the incident occurred.

“Prima facie, the driver appears to have dozed off briefly, following which the bus crashed into the truck from behind,” Mr. Pandey told PTI.

The impact severely damaged the front portion of the bus, the police said.

Circle Officer Ajay Singh said police teams rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation to evacuate trapped passengers from the damaged vehicle.

“The driver got trapped between the steering wheel and the seat and was pulled out with the help of a Hydra machine,” Singh said.

All injured passengers were taken to Saifai Medical College for treatment, where bus driver Ram Jeevan (43), a resident of Basti district, and passenger Ram Naresh (35) of Gonda were declared dead by doctors, he added.

The injured were provided treatment and later discharged, the officer said.
