Two get life imprisonment in Guntur dowry death case

A special court for the trial of crimes against women in Guntur on Wednesday sentenced two persons to life imprisonment in a dowry harassment case that led to the death of a married woman and her young daughter in 2020, District Superintendent of Police Vakul Jindal said in a statement.

According to the prosecution, the victim, daughter of Bachina Vijayalakshmi of J. Panguluru in Prakasam district, married Narra Kalyan Chandra on August 3, 2017. Her family had allegedly given 400 grams of gold, a house site, agricultural land and ₹1.5 lakh as dowry.

The prosecution stated that Kalyan Chandra, his father Narra Srimannarayana and his mother Narra Kameswari allegedly subjected the woman to mental and physical harassment, demanding more dowry.

Unable to bear the alleged harassment, the woman, along with her young daughter, ended he life in Guntur on August 29, 2020.

Acting on a complaint lodged by the victim’s mother, Pattabhipuram police registered a case under Sections 498A and 304B read with Section 34 of the IPC and Sections 3, 4 and 6 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Fifth Additional District and Sessions Judge G. Deena Babu convicted Narra Kalyan Chandra and Narra Kameswari, sentencing them to life imprisonment and imposing a fine of ₹30,000 each. The investigation was led by then West Sub-Division SDPO K. Supraja, while the prosecution was conducted by Additional Public Prosecutor Muttineni Subba Rao, Mr. Vakul Jindal said.
