Actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has moved the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the death of 41 people at a ‘stampede’ at the party’s Karur rally on Saturday night. The party alleged conspiracy by the ruling DMK for the tragedy.
In his petition, TVK’s general secretary (Election Campaign Management) Aadhav Arjuna claimed the stampede at Velusamypuram in Karur district was engineered by the police and local DMK politicians. Unless the CBI takes up the case there is no possibility to bring the truth to light and justice to the innocent people who died in the stampede, he contended.
Following the mention made by TVK lawyer S. Arivazhagan at the residence of Justice M. Dhandapani in Chennai on September 28, TVK moved the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court for listing the matter for hearing.
The High Court Registry officials said the vacation court procedures will be followed for listing of cases. The application for urgent matters should be presented to vacation officers on September 30, as per a Madras High Court notification.
A Division Bench of Justices M. Dhandapani and M. Jothiraman will sit at the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court as vacation court judges on October 3 to dispose of the urgent matters.
