Tamil actor Trisha on Monday (February 16) condemned the ‘distasteful and inappropriate remark’ that has been circulating on social media, and asserted that she is not aligned with any political party. While Trisha refrained from naming anyone, her statement comes just days after Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran made a crass remark about her and actor and TVK chief Vijay while speaking to journalists on February 14.

A statement drafted by Trisha’s legal counsel reads, “My client [Trisha] never expected that such distasteful and inappropriate remark would be made by a person holding a high stature in the State’s political space. My client makes it very clear that she is not affiliated with any political party neither does she intend to be. Further, just as my client had continuously maintained in the past, she has always taken a neutral stand when it comes to politics.”

“My client wishes to be defined only by her craft and not by any alleged political alignment. Further and most importantly, it is a common saying that personal lives should never be made the subject of public commentary or discourse, and it is expected that persons holding high positions maintain responsibility and equanimity in public discourse,” read the statement, adding that Trisha’s name shouldn’t be drawn into matter that do not concern her.

What is the controversy?

Two days ago, Nagenthran stirred up a storm with a personal remark while responding to Vijay’s statement that DMK would be TVK’s sole challenger at the upcoming Assembly elections. “Vijay should come out of Trisha’s house to gain experience,” said Nagenthran, a statement that has snowballed into a huge controversy.

Many political leaders, like DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan and Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief K. Selvaperunthagai, have criticised Nagenthran’s comment as inappropriate and crass.
