Tragedy during Ganesha idol immersion procession: Deputy Commissioner promises compensation under CM’s relief fund

Following the death of two minor boys during a Ganesha immersion procession in Raichur recently, Deputy Commissioner Poovitha S. visited the grieving families on Sunday to offer her condolences and assure them of full State support and compensation under the Chief Minister’s relief fund.

​Superintendent of Police Arunangshu Giri and Assistant Commissioner of the Raichur Sub-Division Hampanna Sajjan accompanied the Ms. Poovitha during the visit.

In the mishap that occurred on Saturday, 12-year-old Suchetkumar and 13-year-old Charankumar died, while a 35-year-old man, Vijay, was injured after all three fell from a moving tractor carrying a Ganesha idol during the procession when the driver allegedly failed to negotiate a speed breaker.

​The officials spent time speaking with the parents and family members, offering their heartfelt condolences for the sudden loss during the festive celebrations.

Public safety caution issued

​Appealing to the community and festival organisers, Ms. Poovitha issued a stern warning regarding safety protocols during religious celebrations.

Speaking to The Hindu over phone on Monday, the Deputy Commissioner confirmed that a formal proposal for financial assistance was being prepared to be forwarded to the State government.

“The officials have been directed to expedite the documentation and administrative process to ensure financial aid reaches the families without delay,” she said.

The requisition will be for ex-gratia compensation for both families under the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

Emphasising the need for exercising caution during public celebrations, the Deputy Commissioner said, ​”Parents and community organisers must ensure that minor children are not sent to crowded processions or near waterbodies during such events. Safety precautions must take absolute priority over celebrations.”
