Popular trekking spots in Anantnag, Kashmir were placed out of bounds on Friday (January 2, 2026), following inputs from security agencies’.

On the banned list are Margan Top, Chauhar Nag, and Sinthan Top. These areas are at an altitude of around 3,696 meters and have traditionally attracted adventure lovers to the high-altitude meadows and glacier lakes they are known for.

According to an order issued by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Kokernag, inputs from police and security agencies indicated security vulnerabilities in certain high-altitude and forested areas falling under sub-division Kokernag.

The order said unrestricted movement and outdoor activities in these sensitive areas “could adversely affect public safety and security”.

“The order will remain valid for two months unless withdrawn or extended,” it said

Meanwhile, the Station House Officer (SHO) Larnoo was directed to ensure strict implementation of the order and regulate movement at all check-points.

Nestled high in the Himalayas, Margan Top, Chauhar Nag and Sinthan Top connect Kisthwar in Jammu with the Kashmir Valley. Margan Top has a trekking trail that leads to Kargil in Ladakh. The area is popular with both local and foreign adventure sports lovers.
