The hilly village of Angadikadavu at Iritty in Kannur, Kerala, has been gripped by fear after a tiger was spotted in a residential area over the past few days. Local residents have limited outdoor movement and children have stayed away from school amid reports of the animal’s presence.
The tiger had reportedly killed a wild boar.
In a separate incident, Appachan, a farmer, narrowly escaped an encounter with the animal by climbing a tree while heading to his farm.
Responding to repeated alerts from residents, forest officials have set up a camp in the area and issued warnings urging people to remain vigilant. Authorities declared a holiday on September 29 for LP and UP school in Angadikadavu as a precautionary measure.
Camera traps
Divisional forest officer Vysak Sasi said five camera traps have been installed to confirm the animal’s movement. So far, none of the cameras have captured the picture of the tiger.
“Though people have confirmed the presence of a tiger, heavy rains have washed away pug marks, making tracking efforts difficult,” he said.
More than 20 forest personnel are patrolling the region, which lies close to the forest boundary.
Officials said strict vigil would continue until the animal is located.
