A ₹1,200 crore manufacturing facility of generic drugmaker Aurobindo Pharma’s subsidiary TheraNym Biologics near Hyderabad, with a potential to generate more than 1,500 jobs for the local youth, was opened on Wednesday (June 3).

Telangana IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu formally inaugurated the facility that will manufacture medicines used in the treatment of cancer and other life-threatening diseases. The products will be exported to several international markets, including the U.S., the Minister’s office said after the event in which Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha and others participated.

The facility has been established at Borpatla village in Hathnoora Mandal of neighbouring Sangareddy district. It is expected to create employment opportunities for more than 1,500 local youth, Mr. Sridhar Babu’s office said.

With the arrival of TheraNym Biologics, the global reputation and value of the Made in Telangana brand in the Life Sciences sector are expected to become even stronger, it said. The State government has been reiterating its focus on consolidating Telangana’s position as a preferred destination for Life Sciences companies.

Two years ago, Aurobindo Pharma had announced the signing of a master service agreement between TheraNym and global pharma major Merck Sharpe & Dohme Singapore Trading Pte. Ltd. (MSD) for contract manufacturing of biologicals.

TheraNym, the parent company said, will manufacture the products and supply to MSD and intends to invest about ₹1,000 crore for establishing a manufacturing facility with large scale bioreactors for any mammalian cell culture product and a vial filling isolator line for commercial drug product manufacturing up to 25-30 mn vials per annum.

Earlier this year, Aurobindo Pharma said TheraNym Biologics will establish a greenfield project for commissioning a largescale mammalian drug substance manufacturing facility (Unit 2) housing a total of 60 KL bioreactor capacities with an investment of around $150-175 million. This followed the signing of product schedule, additional to the existing contract manufacturing operations (CMO) agreement, with MSD, it had said.

Separately, Aurobindo Pharma said ahead of the inauguration, the company’s Directors and the senior leadership team of MSD called on Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, briefing him on the project and expressing gratitude for the government’s support. TheraNym represents Aurobindo Pharma’s foray into biologics contract manufacturing — a segment growing worldwide and increasingly vital to meeting global demand for biologic therapies.

The facility is positioned to serve the supply chains of leading global pharmaceutical companies. It is equipped with 15 KL bioreactors, advanced downstream processing suites, aseptic fill-finish capabilities and quality control laboratories.

“We are privileged to welcome MSD as TheraNym’s anchor customer,” CEO Biologics and Director of Aurobindo Pharma Satakarni Makkapati said. The facility is intended to support MSD supply chain, both domestic and export markets, subject to applicable approvals and customer requirements.
