A recent interaction between Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray has raised the possibility of a pre-poll alliance ahead of civic elections in Maharashtra. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said on Monday (October 6, 2025) that the meeting was political in nature and that discussions are progressing.

Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, Mr. Raut said that the two leaders have agreed to explore collaboration in major municipal corporations, including Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli, Nashik, and Pune.

“There are several civic bodies where Shiv Sena (UBT) has a strong presence, while MNS is influential in others. The NCP (SP) and Congress also hold sway in different regions, particularly in Vidarbha. The personal and political rapport between the Thackeray cousins has grown stronger, and their talks have moved forward significantly,” he said.

He said that Mumbai’s next mayor would be a Marathi leader with true saffron values, who would not bend before Delhi.

Alliance of heart and mind

On Sunday (October 5, 2025), the cousins met during the naming ceremony of Mr. Raut’s grandchild in Bandra. Following that, Mr. Raj visited Mr. Uddhav’s residence, Matoshri.

Mr. Raut said, “This alliance is being shaped with both heart, and mind and it is more than just a political arrangement. It’s a partnership built with tan (body), mann (mind), and dhan (money). Together, the alliance wants to work for the welfare of farmers and people who are suffering under the poor leadership of the Mahayuti government.”

On the possibility of the MNS joining the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), he said that the decision rests with Raj Thackeray. “While the MNS remains an independent party, it maintains cordial relations with MVA leaders. The MVA was formed for the state assembly. For civic polls, a new strategy will be devised,” he said.

Elections to several municipal corporations, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), are expected to be held by the end of the year.

On the recent visit by Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, he said, “Why is Amit Shah not visiting Marathwada? Why is this government scared of meeting grieving farmers? Are they scared of their questions? They arrested Sonam Wangchuck for a peaceful protest. Is it a crime to stage a protest in democracy? Why is this government scared of people who have questions?”
