Work underway to lay new drainage pipes in Bhagirathpura area of Madhya Pradesh’s Indore; the tragedy had come to light on December 29, 2025 and has impacted more than 3,000 people so far.

The Madhya Pradesh government has formed a high-level investigation committee to probe the diarrhoea outbreak which has claimed several lives in Indore’s Bhagirathpura area due to contaminated drinking water supplied by the Indore Municipal Corporation.
The State-level committee has been constituted to conduct a detailed review of the events surrounding contaminated water supply in Indore city, and to present its conclusions, suggestions, and recommendations, the Madhya Pradesh government said in a statement. The panel will submit its report to the government within a month.
The panel will be chaired by Additional Chief Secretary, General Administration Department, Sanjay Kumar Shukla, and have as its members the Principal Secretary, Public Health Engineering, P. Narahari; and Commissioner, Directorate of Urban Administration and Development, Sanket Bhodve. Indore Divisional Commissioner Sudam Khade has been made the member-secretary.
“The committee will examine the actual causes and relevant facts of the incident that occurred in Bhagirathpura, Indore, and analyse the administrative, technical, and management shortcomings related to the incident,” the statement read, adding that the panel would also determine the accountability of the officers/employees responsible for the incident.
It will also provide necessary suggestions to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future, and may also include other matters deemed necessary or incidental to the investigation.
“The committee will be able to obtain necessary records, reports, and information from the concerned departments, and will also conduct site inspections if required,” the government said.
The tragedy had come to light on December 29, 2025 and has impacted more than 3,000 people so far. While an audit report by government doctors has pegged the death toll at 15, local reports say at least 24 people have so far died in the tragedy, including one death being reported last week.
Eleven persons are still in the hospital and five of them are in the intensive care unit, Indore Chief Medical and Health Officer Madhav Prasad Hasani told The Hindu.
