The tender proceedings will begin this month for the ₹506.48 crore Vattiyurkavu junction development project, which involves major road works within Thiruvananthapuram city.

The Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) sanctioned funding for the project. The tender is expected to be called before January 20, with the work set to start on the ground by February, said V.K.Prasanth, MLA.

The project involves the development of the 10.8 km stretch from Sasthamangalam – Vattiyurkavu – Mannarakkonam – Peroorkada and from there to Mukkola and Vazhayila. The road will be developed with a width of 18.5 metres. The land acquisition proceedings have already been completed in the first reach from Sasthamangalam to Mannarakkonam and in the second reach from Mannarakkonam to Peroorkada. Around 99% of the old constructions in the acquired land in these two reaches have now been removed.

An amount of ₹415.34 crore was spent on land acquisition for the two stretches, while an amount of ₹28.69 crore will be spent on the renovation of the first reach and an amount of ₹24.50 crore on the renovation of the second reach. The land acquisition proceedings for the third reach from Mannarakkonam to Vazhayila is ongoing, for which ₹212.91 crore is expected to be spent. An amount of ₹13.63 crore has been allocated for shifting the electric, drinking water and sewerage lines in the existing road.

The Vattiyurkavu junction development project is being implemented under two special purpose vehicles (SPVs), with the Kerala Road Fund Board handling the junction development and the road development works and the Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (TRIDA) handling the rehabilitation works for the traders who had to give up their commercial establishments and land for the project.

An area of 2.31 acres has been acquired at a cost of ₹89 crore for carrying out rehabilitation activities. In the first phase, shops and allied facilities are being set up for 58 traders. In the second phase, a commercial complex, banquet hall, amphitheatre, movie theatre and food court will also be set up.
