Work to remove bunds, used for the construction of the ₹3,570-crore double-decker four-lane wide elevated corridor from the Chennai Port to Maduravoyal, from the Cooum River is nearing completion.
A total of 238 temporary bunds had been formed for the construction of piles.
Official sources in the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said that only 60 bunds remained to be removed, and the excavators of the contractor had been busy for some time now.
This work is being carried out to ensure the free flow of water in the river during the northeast monsoon. Last year too, the NHAI had removed 89 bunds from near the numbered pillars before the monsoon.
Meanwhile, the project, which will reduce congestion on city roads, especially those leading to the port, is being taken up in four packages. It is progressing well. Of the two tiers, one will be exclusively for those heading towards/from the port. These would be mostly heavy vehicles.
S. Padmanabhan, who is in the exim trade, said that the project would help the import/export community, and definitely, the port. However, movement of goods to Kattupalli and Ennore would not be through this corridor since they use the Outer Ring Road.
The port is coming up with a dry dock so connectivity to that facility would also be possible, he further said.
