The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) bagged Kalyandurgam Municipality on Thursday (December 11, 2025). The TDP councillor from the 15th ward, T. Goutami, got elected as the new chairperson of the Municipality, defeating Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party’s (YSRCP) councillor M. Lakshmanna.

In the elections held in 2021, the YSRCP bagged the Municipality and its councillor from the 10th ward, Talari Rajkumar, was unanimously elected as the chairperson. Mr. Rajkumar was a petty businessman who used to sell papaya and other fruits on a roadside pushcart. The YSRCP made him contest the election and made him the chairperson.

After the TDP came to power, Mr. Rajkumar was removed from the post on charges of misusing his powers by the government, in October 2025 necessitating the election.

On Thursday (December 11, 2025), of the 24 ward members, 22 have participated in the voting along with two ex officio members, who include Anantapur TDP MP G. Lakshminarayana and local MLA Amilineni Surendra Babu. Two ward members abstained from voting.

A total of 13 councillors supported Ms. Goutami, while Mr. Lakshmanna got 11 votes. Election Presiding Officer Vasanth Babu declared Ms. Goutami as victorious and administered the oath of office. MP Lakshminarayana, MLA Surendra Babu and Municipal Commissioner Vamsi Krishna Bhargav were present.
