The Telangana government will establish anti-drug and safety committees in all schools, colleges and other educational institutions as part of a proposed Statewide plan to make campuses drug-free, Director General of Police C.V. Anand said on Wednesday.
The DGP announced the plan after chairing a review meeting with EAGLE Force officials. He said every institution would also be required to appoint a campus safety coordinator to oversee student safety, anti-drug awareness programmes, counselling and coordination with parents and the police.
Officials of the EAGLE Force presented a proposed framework for the committees, including their responsibilities, implementation and monitoring mechanisms. Mr. Anand directed officials to incorporate suggestions from the Education Department, experts and other concerned departments before finalising the standard operating procedures and regulatory guidelines.
He said educational institutions should have zero tolerance towards drugs and directed that strict action be taken against institutions found facilitating or ignoring drug-related activity. Where necessary, authorities would be recommended to cancel the recognition of such institutions, he said.
The proposed measures also include mandatory anti-drug awareness programmes during admissions, deployment of psychologists and counsellors, greater parental involvement and sustained awareness campaigns.
The DGP directed the Police, Education and Health departments to work together on the anti-drug strategy. A further review meeting will be held before the proposal is submitted to the government for approval.
