The Bihar Assembly election 2025 results threw up several surprises, with a number of sitting MLAs losing their seats, including Tej Pratap Yadav, the eldest son of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad, in the Mahua Assembly constituency.

Mr. Yadav finished third, losing by a margin of 51,938 votes. Sanjay Kumar Singh of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) won the seat by a margin of 44,997 votes, defeating sitting RJD MLA Mukesh Kumar Raushan.

After being expelled from the RJD, Mr. Yadav, who had won the Hasanpur Assembly seat in 2020, formed his own party, the Janshakti Janata Dal (JJD), and contested the election under its banner. He had earlier won the Mahua seat in 2015.

Among Ministers, Sumit Kumar Singh lost in the Chakai Assembly constituency to RJD nominee Savitri Devi by a margin of 12,972 votes. Mr. Singh had won the seat in 2020 as an Independent.

The Congress suffered major setbacks, with Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Shakeel Ahmad Khan losing in Kadwa by 18,368 votes to JD(U) candidate Dulal Chandra Goswami. Bihar Congress president Rajesh Kumar was defeated in the Kutumba Assembly seat by Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) candidate Lalan Ram by 21,525 votes.

Both Deputy Chief Ministers of Bihar, Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, who contested from Tarapur and Lakhisarai respectively, won their seats. Mr. Choudhary had last contested an Assembly election in 2010 and has since been a member of the Bihar Legislative Council.

Among prominent faces, Bhojpuri actor-singer Khesari Lal Yadav and Ritesh Kumar Pandey lost in their respective constituencies. Mr. Yadav contested on an RJD ticket, while Mr. Pandey was fielded by the Jan Suraaj Party (JSP), which failed to win a single seat in its first electoral outing.

However, folk singer Maithili Thakur secured a victory and became the youngest MLA in Bihar, winning from the Alinagar Assembly seat.

BJP leader Mangal Pandey won the Siwan Assembly seat, defeating sitting MLA and former Speaker Awadh Bihari Choudhary.

In Siwan district, Osama Shahab, son of the late don-turned-politician Mohammad Shahabuddin, won the Raghunathpur seat by defeating JD(U) candidate Vikas Kumar Singh by 9,248 votes. This marks the first electoral win for a member of the Shahabuddin family in more than two decades.

Hena Shahab, wife of the former MP, has previously contested four Lok Sabha elections unsuccessfully — three on an RJD ticket and the last as an Independent after being denied a nomination.

YouTuber Manish Kashyap, contesting on a JSP ticket for the Chanpatia Assembly seat, also lost, finishing third. Congress candidate Abhishek Ranjan won the seat, defeating BJP candidate Umakant Singh.

Former Assam-cadre IPS officer Anand Mishra, who contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election as an Independent, won the Buxar seat as the BJP candidate, defeating sitting Congress MLA Sanjay Tiwari alias Munna Tiwari by 28,353 votes.

BJP leader Ram Kripal Yadav, who had lost the 2024 Lok Sabha election, won the Danapur seat by defeating sitting RJD MLA Reet Lal Yadav.

Jyoti Singh, wife of Bhojpuri actor-singer Pawan Singh, lost the election from Karakat as an Independent. Mr. Singh had joined the BJP weeks before the Assembly election.

Snehlata, wife of Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) Chief Upendra Kushwaha won Sasaram seat by defeating RJD’s candidate Satendra Sah with the margin of 25443 votes.
