Teachers deputed for the ongoing Social and Educational Survey in Karnataka have been asked to continue field work till Sunday (October 19) evening, after which they will be relieved from survey duties. As per the earlier schedule, their work was to end on Saturday (October 18).

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is set to chair a review meeting on the survey on Sunday. While the survey has made substantial progress in rest of Karnataka, it has been tardy in the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) area, barely reaching 40% mark.

Teachers have been instructed to enumerate till 9 p.m. on Sunday in GBA area and cover as much ground as possible. A senior official in GBA told The Hindu that officials plan to request the Chief Minister for an extension, as the survey is expected to slow further from October 20, when most teachers return to schools.

“The slower progress in Bengaluru is largely due to its high concentration of apartment complexes and large residential buildings. In majority of the apartments, our survey teams have not been allowed entry,” said an official.

The survey process will, however, remain open online till October 30, allowing citizens to complete the self-survey through the designated digital platform.

According to official data, of the total target of 1,48,14,286 households, surveys have been completed in 1,42,74,031 households, covering a population of 5.29 crore, which accounts for 87.32% of the estimated total. However, in the GBA area, survey coverage stood at 39.76%, with 17,84,312 households surveyed out of the total target of 39,82,335.

“While teachers will be relieved by October 19 evening, other enumerators can still go to the field and complete the survey if they have been unable to complete their target,” said a top official from the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes Commission.
