The Tamil Nadu government has constituted two committees — a high-level expert committee, headed by School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, and a curriculum design committee — to revamp the State’s school curriculum.

According to a government order (G.O.) issued by the School Education Department, the curriculum design committee will be headed by State Planning Commission member Sultan Ahmed Ismail, who is the former Head of the Department of Zoology, The New College. “The committee will develop a new curriculum design based on the Tamil Nadu State Education Policy, 2025, to ensure the overall development of children, in line with the sociocultural and linguistic diversity to provide students with an opportunity to learn,” the order stated.

It will seek the educational views from all stakeholders and formulate recommendations for a new curriculum design. It will draft the curriculum for school education in the State based on the State Education Policy 2025, which whill will be submitted to the high-level committee for consideration.

“This curriculum design committee will conduct a detailed study on the changes that need to be made in the current curriculum, syllabi, teaching approach, and assessment methods, considering the gap between learning-teaching objectives and outcomes,” said School Education Secretary B. Chandra Mohan.

He added that in order to discuss and finalise the recommendations on the reform measures to be taken in school education based on the State Education Policy, the high-level expert committee was formed. This committee includes ISRO chief V. Narayanan, cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, educationist S. Madasamy, Carnatic vocalist C. Soumya, child rights activist A. Devaneyan, besides officials from the School Education Department. The term of both committees is three years.
