T.N. BJP wants TVK government to release White Paper on TASMAC shops

BJP State unit president Nainar Nagenthran on Monday (July 27, 2026) questioned the TVK-led Tamil Nadu government on whether it would release a White Paper on the number of State-run retail liquor outlets, also known as TASMAC shops. Referring to the government’s announcement that it had shut down 717 such shops, he said a reply to a query under the Right to Information (RTI) Act had raised doubts about the claim.

Sharing on social media the reply reportedly given by TASMAC officials to an RTI applicant, Mr. Nagenthran charged that it was not clear how many TASMAC shops had been opened after the TVK-led government assumed office. He questioned why the reply directed the applicant to approach regional authorities separately and why the TVK-led government was hesitant to release a White Paper in this regard.

“Were those 717 TASMAC shops indeed shut down, or did the TVK government float such a rumour only to earn goodwill among the people after assuming office? The Chief Minister should answer these questions from the people. Mere rhetoric and hollow propaganda will not do,” Mr. Nagenthran contended.
