Five days after a Plus One student was injured in what was suspected to be a ‘hit-and-run’ case, the Elamakkara police on Tuesday clarified that the accident took place as the girl rode her bicycle into the door of a multi-utility vehicle.
A 54-year-old woman, who drove the vehicle and allegedly caused the accident by carelessly opening the door, was arrested and let off on Tuesday, the police said. The arrested is Raji Nandakumar, a resident of Subhash Nagar, Elamakkara. Her vehicle has been seized by the police. It will be subjected to scientific examinations, the police said.
The accident occurred around 3.45 p.m. on January 15 near People’s Cooperative Bank on Desabhimani Road when the girl was riding back home from school.
Earlier, it was suspected that the girl was hit by a black SUV, which was seen speeding past in the same direction at the time of the accident. Though the owner of the car who drove the vehicle was summoned by the police, he was let off after the police were convinced that his vehicle did not cause the accident.
Additional footage collected from the area revealed that just before the accident, a multi-utility vehicle had stopped nearby. The visuals showed the driver allegedly opening the door and the girl falling down instantly.
The accused woman was reportedly among the local people who helped rush the injured girl to hospital.
