The surgery to remove the surgical instrument that was found in a Kerala woman’s abdomen following a 2021 surgery was successfully performed on Saturday (February 21, 2026). The artery forceps were removed at Amrita Hospital in Kochi.

The surgery was led by Dr. O.V. Sudheer, Head of Gastrosurgery Department at Amrita Hospital; Dr. K.V. Sanjeevan, Head of Urology Department; and Dr. Radhamani. K, Head of Gynecology Department.

Ernakulam Government Medical College medical superintendent Dr. Ganesh Mohan and Head of Surgery Department Dr. Abdul Ziyad A. K., were also present at time of the procedure. The doctors have reported that the patient’s condition was satisfactory after the surgery. The recovered surgical instrument was handed over to the Ambalappuzha police.

The surgery in which the surgical insgtrument was left in the abdomen is alleged to have been carried out at Alappuzha Government Medical College hospital five years ago. The Director of Medical Education had earlier suspended J. Shahida, the gynaecologist who performed the surgery, and P.S. Dhanya, the nurse who had been part of the surgical team.
